It looks like a tiny detail. But French wire is one of those finishing techniques that can completely change how a piece of jewellery looks — and wears.

You may never have noticed it.

At the end of a beautifully finished pearl necklace or bracelet, just before the clasp, you’ll sometimes see a tiny coil of metal wrapped around the thread.

It’s called French wire — or gimp.

And once you know what it is, you’ll start noticing when it’s there. And when it isn’t.

So what actually is French wire?

French wire is an extremely fine coil of metal that slips over the jewellery thread where it connects to the clasp.

The thread passes through the wire, around the clasp and back into the pearls.

So rather than seeing exposed thread sitting directly against a metal clasp, you see a tiny, neat section of metal coil.

It sounds insignificant.

But in jewellery, the smallest details are often what make something feel beautifully finished.

Why use it?

There are really two reasons.

The first is protection.

Thread rubbing repeatedly against a metal clasp creates friction. French wire creates a barrier between the two.

The second is appearance.

Instead of thread disappearing rather abruptly into a clasp, French wire creates a much more considered transition between the pearls and the metal finding.

That’s the difference between simply assembling jewellery and thinking about how a piece is finished.

Why should you care?

Because when you’re buying jewellery, you’re usually looking at the obvious things first.

The pearls. The colour. The clasp. The overall design.

But start looking at the connections.

How has the clasp been attached? Can you see exposed thread? Are the finishing components neat? Do the materials transition beautifully from one to another?

These tiny decisions can tell you a surprising amount about how a piece has been made.

And what about those knots between the pearls?

That’s another detail worth noticing.

Traditionally, fine pearl strands are often individually knotted between the pearls.

There are practical reasons for this.

The knots help stop the pearls rubbing directly against each other. And if the strand ever breaks, they can help prevent an entire necklace of pearls scattering across the floor.

But there is another reason I love knotting.

It changes the way the jewellery feels.

A beautifully knotted strand has movement, softness and flexibility. The thread becomes part of the design rather than something we’re simply trying to hide.
